A. Leslie Calloway Delmarva Collection

Known as the A. Leslie Calloway Delmarva Collection. Mrs. Calloway (1905 -1993) bequeathed monies for the library to maintain this collection, which documents the rich cultural heritage of the Delmarva Peninsula. Today the collection features more than 9,000 books, maps, postcards, pottery, ephemera, and framed artifacts. Anyone doing research on Delaware and Eastern Shore families, their businesses, churches, schools, or clubs will find treasures here. The Collection also features biographies of distinguished individuals who hail from the region and published works of literature by local authors.

One of the highlights is the John Dickinson Memorial Collection of newspaper articles (72 c.f.), bequeathed to the Library in 2001 by Delawareana specialist and school librarian, the late John Dickinson of Smyrna.

Most materials are for “in-library” use only, but there is a small lending collection of duplicates, and many “single copy” items may be borrowed by special arrangement.  The Library maintains a high quality copier, printer, scanner and film/fiche reader/printer.  Cataloged holdings are fully searchable on the Delaware Library Catalog.

Many of the images here are from our Postcard Collection. Our patrons are now able to find images and historical information with easy and accurate subject searching. Our Digital Collections will be expanded and updated on an ongoing basis.

Picture postcards, most popular in the first part of the twentieth century, often depicted aspects of American culture that were not captured in any other medium. This collection offers views of Delaware that have changed over time or no longer exist.
